Where is Chilika Lake?
Above all Chilika Lake is the largest brackish water lake in India and it spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India. However it flows in to Bay of Bengal at the mouth of Daya river. Still covered an area of over 1,100 km2. Of course it is the biggest lake of India after Vembanad Lake. This lake is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the largest brackish water lagoon in the world after The New Caledonian barrier reef. Thus it has been listed as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the largest salt water lake in India.
The largest brackish water lake in Asia is a big tourist attraction for its scenic beauties, similarly Nalabana, the sanctuary of migratory birds, Irrawaddy Dolphins, fish produces, boating and an aquarium at Satapada are equally important. Satapada is 80 Kilometers from Konark and is connected through National Highway 316 and just 90 minutes’ drive. The lake has many islands and picnic spots of unique scenic beauty and also it has a famous temple of Goddess at Kalijai Island. You can visit Chilika lake from almost any spot in Odisha. The most convenient places from where you can visit Chilika through Balugaon or Barkul On Natianal Highway 5 between Bhubaneswar and Berhampurcan secondly through Satapada close to Puri.
